Ministry of Internal Affairs/GALP Energia advertising campaign on road casualties
2006/08/09 19:00
APTCA and SNPVAC reacted firmly against the model used in this campaign, even though completely agreement with its aims. The following articles reflect these standpoints:

Gil Passos, Board President of APTCA, in the site www.portugaldiario.pt
2006-08-05 11:41
"The Cabin Crew are among those professionals most concerned about the safety issues as they deal with them in their job with the airlines. This fact leads them to understand and support, without hesitation, the aim of the campaign, but cannot avoid feeling that they are being used abusively, illegitimately and completely out of place. In my role as Board President of the Portuguese Cabin Crew Association (APTCA), which represents around 1700 of these professionals, I have to express, in the name of those represented by this Institution, our indignation due to this regretful involvement. Not all ends justify the means. The world’s safest means of transport, namely the Portuguese airline industry, does not deserve being “used” to alert to the tragic effects of road casualties, even by using a metaphor. This linking is highly inadequate and regretful. Advertising resorts to certain types of emotions to provoke reactions, as we all know. But everything has its limits and common sense is to be expected foremost from those who are supposed to identify it.”

Press Statement – 2006/08/04

MAI advertising campaign misrepresents the image of Air Transport

“SNPVAC (Sindicato de Pessoal de Voo da Aviação Civil) and APTCA (Associação Portuguesa dos Tripulantes de Cabine) express their deep regret, and consider distasteful and false, the advertising campaign on road accident prevention created and sponsored by MAI (Ministry of Internal Affairs) and GALP Energia.
We reject the use of commercial air transport, proved to be the safest in the world, as a means to attain the aims, by creating a false image of this means of transport.
Equally serious is the fact referred on GALP’s site that “GALP will use promoters dressed as stewardess and stewards(one should read Cabin Crew) handing out leaflets, with information on speed limits on Portuguese roads, as well as drawing tattoos on children with this information”.
With this action, GALP Energia crosses all boundaries, with the illegitimate use of the image of Cabin Crew, associating them with a campaign harmful to air transport, and which we strongly repudiate.
Although we are solidary with this cause and willing to cooperate in all actions leading to a decrease in the country’s road casualties, we cannot refrain from considering an act of social irresponsibility to associate Commercial Aviation with the terrible reality on national roads.
This is why we feel we have the right to demand the withdrawal of the campaign in this format”
